Joe's depiction of one of several Fort Vaux pillboxes. It was an historical fact that the defenders inside Fort Vaux was dying of thirst due to lack of water. Rain fell on Fort Vaux but the French were unable to get the much needed water because the Germans occupied the exterior of Fort Vaux. He described the ironic situation perfectly with this scene.
